I love watching fireworks in Richmond VA, especially down by the James River. Places like Dogwood Dell or Rockett’s Landing have awesome shows. Or even from Scott’s Addition if you didn’t actually get tickets for the Richmond Squirrels game.
It’s close enough to grab a camping chair and station up in an empty lot. Although those are getting harder to come by. There’s also a bunch of rooftop spots like The Hof, Star Hill Brewery, or even one of those fancy new apartment complexes if you know somebody who knows somebody. Not that I’ve ever done that, but just saying it’s gotta be a possibility. At least a balcony. Never know.
I say all of this of course with an asterisk when talking about 2020. I know some of these places had fireworks, but between covid craziness and rain, I stayed inside and watched from social media feeds.
But now with things opening back up, I’m looking forward to getting out on July 4th and continuing my trend of taking sweet pictures. Some of the below images rank among my all-time favorites.
Random Richmond Fireworks
These images were taken in Oregon Hill back in 2019 at a cookout. No, this was not an official show and no the fireworks did not last long. Not sure who set them off in the neighborhood, but they were pretty short-lived. Glad I got what I was looking for.
Joining The Crowd At Rockett’s Red Glare
Back in 2019 on July 4th, I was heading back to Richmond after an early family cookout in Chesterfield. I wasn’t 100% sure that I was going to try and watch any fireworks, but I had my camera and tripod with me just in case. I’m glad I did. As I captured what is still my highest “Liked” image on Instagram.
And yes, this is in Richmond VA.

Taken down by the James River near the Manchester Bridge watching the Rocketts Red Glare fireworks show. I didn’t have a zoom lens with me so I cropped the image heavily to show exactly how I envisioned it.
A lot of effort went into creating the shot. If you’re interested I went into a little more detail in the YouTube video below. Has a few more pictures from the night as well.
What’s Next For Richmond Fireworks In 2021?
Only time will tell, but I’ll be sure to update this blog post when I get some pics.
Everyone be safe out there.
Cheers!
